Henriette Hirschfeld was born and raised in Germany, but had to come to the United States in order to attend dental school due to the lack of German dental schools. She attended University of Pennslyvania, becoming the first female dentist to take a full college course in dentistry when she graduated in 1869. Hirschfeld then moved back to Germany where she opened a practice in Berlin.
