San Juan Island Walk at American Camp

Join Walking Adventures on a 4.5 km walk through the historic grounds of American Camp. This is an outstanding scenic walk that is full of interesting history.  Overlooking the Juan de Fuca Strait, with views of Olympic National Park, this was the site of the Pig War of 1859-1872, when the area was jointly settled by British and American citizens.  The shooting of a pig nearly sparked an international incident and led to joint military occupation of the island until a solution to the border dispute could be determined.  Eventually the Haro Strait was chosen by Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany as the international boundary in 1872 and it has been so ever since.  The first part of this walk is very well signed with interpretive info boards along the way.
