You stumble to your feet and wipe the tears from your flushed cheeks as you are pushed with the crowd to where Pilate, the judge, stood with Jesus to his right. It was customary each Passover for the people to repeal the death sentence of one criminal. Surely this would be an easy choice this year! Who could possibly compare to Jesus and the goodness he exhibited to everyone? Who else would even be considered? Even Pilate himself declared that he had found no fault in Jesus!
As the people’s opposing choice was brought in, muffled chanting had already begun, “Barabbas! Barabbas! We choose Barabbas!” You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. How could this be? Why were so many siding with this murdering rebel leader?! You wanted to scream out Jesus’ name, but you were gripped with fear as the voices around you got louder and louder. Surely someone would speak up. Anyone!
Have you ever wanted to take a stand for God’s truth and goodness, but remained silent in fear of what people may think? What friends or even family you may lose? When you don’t take a stand, the mob makes a choice for you. Are you willing to live with that outcome or are you ready to find your voice?
