Copper Mine

In 1882, a group of investors led by retired US General George McClellan, invested in mining operations across the Southwest. The McClellan copper mine operated here until 1888. There was never sufficient water to properly separate the copper and the mine never produced copper from the ore. After the mine was closed, many local ranchers scavenged the wood and metal from the mine and can still be found in old homesteads in the county.
