Rhythm & Ritual: Music of the Ancient Americas

At times, the past can appear to be static, as the objects are seemingly condemned to sit in silence, removed from the context in which they were regularly used. In reality,
each object has a rich life history. Rhythm and Ritual celebrates the life history of these instruments by populating people’s perception of the past with sound and music,
helping museum visitors to better understand the lived experiences of ancient people while simultaneously creating a connection to culture and music that endures
today.

This exhibition looks at the categories of musical instruments played throughout the ancient Americas, explores the context in which music was performed in different
cultural settings, and honors the lasting legacies of this important art form. I invite you to explore the nearly 80 objects in these galleries dating from 2500 BCE to 1550 CE,
and encourage you to play some of the 3D printed replicas of the musical instruments on display.
