In the 5th bay is a window in memory of Caroline Noel (1817-1877), the hymn writer and youngest daughter of a former Vicar of Romsey. Author of a number of poems expressing her faith, she is best known for the popular hymn, ‘At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow’. Caroline was ill for much of her life, and the window depicts Christ healing the blind man. You can see a wall plaque in her memory on the wall nearby.
The glass was made by the German firm of Franz Mayer of Munich and dates from 1880. The company, which was founded in 1847, also makes mosaics and is still family-owned.
Continue eastwards, past the brightly-curtained Abbess's Doorway and turn right into the South Transept.
