John and Clara Rich were the first pioneers to settle in DeLand. Their log cabin was across the street from our shop, close to the Catholic church. On quiet weekend afternoons, when traffic slows to a lull outside, we sometimes hear the sound of a horse-drawn wagon passing by. We think it’s John and Clara Rich, driving past their old homestead. Both are buried nearby, in Oakdale Cemetery, near the streets that were named in their honor.
