34-40 Sheridan Street

Reverse back down Sheridan to find a row of brick row houses. These brick row houses were built by the real estate developer Timothy Bowe in 1896.  The housing in the Hyde Square area was mostly created by small-scale developers between 1860 and 1900.  Timothy Bowe, who was an Irish-American, called this area “Cedar Hill”. He developed both sides of Sheridan Street and the even side of the next street down, which he called Bowe Street (it is now known as Forbes Street)

These brick row houses are on a much more modest scale than those in the South End. Even though they are small, they still have lovely details: there is a brick bay on the front of each house which continues up through the mansard roof. There are striking brick dentils on the cornice and gable, and there is the nice touch of the angled brickwork under the first floor windows.  #34 and #36 maintain hoods over their entries with nice wooden brackets.
