Emeline Roberts Jones was the first woman to practice dentistry in the United States. Jones' husband was a dentist, but he didn't approve of women becoming dentists. Jones' desire to become a dentist led her to secretly practice filling teeth, and after seeing this her husband allowed her to assist him. After her husband died, Jones opened her own practice, which became one of the largest practices in Conneticut. She was posthumorously elected into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame.
