Benjamin Whiting of Hollis was the first high Sheriff and tasked with enforcing the “Pine Tree Law”. - White Pine Trees growing in New Hampshire towns fit "for the royal navy" were reserved to the King. In the spring of 1772, a citizen named Mudgett and others were accused of unlawfully cutting King's trees in Weare, NH and arrested. Rioters protested the arrest, and it is likely this law & riot contributed to New Hampshire’s hostility towards the Brittish Government as the Revolutionary War unfolded.
