Quartermasters are critical to any military operation and the Forbes campaign had unique challenges that depended on the success of good logistics. Sir John St. Clair, the Quartermaster of the Forbes Campaign, applied himself to his supply orders with energy and gusto. But he ran afoul of colonial businessmen and administrators and his British comrades alike. Some found him an irritable old soldier - others found him a wild eccentric fop. His impatient tirades and incredibly petulant letters included bouts of circular second-guessing of himself and others. He lacked the finesse and tact for a position that required agreement and compromise. Still, St. Clair was weighted with a monumental task, and given the success of the mission, you should judge him effectively.
