On the west wall of the transept is another modern window, representing St Swithun, patron saint of the Abbey’s daughter church at Crampmoor.
This glass is by Francis Skeat of St Albans, and was placed in 1951 in memory of Canon Corban, who had been Vicar for the previous 27 years. The heraldic shields around the central figure are linked with Corban’s life and career. They are as follows, starting at the top and going anti-clockwise:
(a) Three ravens for Corban (corbus = raven)
(b) See of Gibraltar, where he was born in 1878, son of an army surgeon
(c) City of Hereford, where he attended the cathedral school
(d) Five chevrons azure: families of Avering or Evering (connection not known)
(e) University of Cambridge
(f) Clare College
(g) Borough of Eastleigh, where he served his title
(h) Diocese of Portsmouth, where he was vicar of St Stephen’s 1914-1925
(i) Borough of Romsey
Leaving the north transept, turn right into the North Nave Aisle. Stop in the first bay.
