Carlos is a Spanish-speaking guest from Honduras who has been coming to Nourish NJ for years. He has a job with a local employer, but it’s been months since he received a paycheck. This isn’t fair! Because Carlos does not speak English, he has difficulty advocating for himself in the workplace.
He tells the Outreach staff the hardships this situation has caused him and his family. Because he has not been paid, he has been unable to make rent, and has had a hard time putting food on the table. The staff invites Carlos to nourish.NJ's free farmers markets. Every week he leaves with six grocery bags stuffed full of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, milk, and bread. For the first time in years, Carlos and his wife can’t wait to get home and cook dinner for their kids!
The Outreach staff also connects Carlos with rental assistance and contacts his employer to confront them about paying his wages. The employer is adamant about withholding Carlos's earnings, so the staff files a wage claim against them. In the meantime, they help him find another job. The new job pays well but is much further away. The staff secures his transportation to and from work. Though it’s a tough transition, the Outreach team provides the necessary supplies and support to get through.
After a long two month wait, good news! Carlos finally receives the money he is owed by his former employer! He is so grateful to the Outreach staff for all their help and hard work. Now he brings his wife and children the free farmer’s market every week to say hello.
